Our new contemporary Food Hall with a traditional Farmer’s Market style, is proving to be very popular with our customers who travel from far and wide to buy the delicious artisan produce we have on offer.  The Food Hall features a fresh meat counter, bakery, delicatessen, and a wide range of products from British and artisan producers - each one carefully hand-picked by our knowledgeable team of buyers.

At Van Hage, we feel it is so important to champion local producers and sustainability, providing a necessary resource for our community and reducing food miles. With over 300sqm to browse you are sure to find something inspiring for your table!

We’d like to introduce you to Crumbs, a family-run artisan bakery devoted to old traditions and methods of baking. Taste the craftsmanship and the love of making and serving honest, tasty food with every bite!

Maria, the founder of Crumbs says ‘love adds that special je ne sais quoi ingredient to our products. Customers enjoy our produce in the same way they enjoy their mother’s cooking – because it is made with love!’

Crumbs started in Maria’s home kitchen and the first market test was carried out in a school car park back in 2016. Maria handed out 30 sourdough loaves in return for feedback. The loaves disappeared in minutes and the positive feedback came flooding in!

With all this wonderful encouragement the decision to start a bakery business was made and many more car park sales followed. This led to selling at Farmer’s Markets including the monthly market we used to hold here at Van Hage.

Next was a high street bakery shop in Watton at Stone with a professional open plan kitchen. This is where the creativity really took off and customers began returning for their favourite treats. Crumbs is particularly well known for their cinnamon buns, carrot and Russian honey cakes and the sourdough bread.

Having now done a full circle, Crumbs Bakery is delighted to be a part of the Van Hage Food Hall. Here you can find a huge range of fresh sourdough and yeasted breads, French style pastries and classic cakes. All the produce is freshly handmade in the early hours of the morning and delivered to Crumbs concession at Van Hage Great Amwell daily.

Crumbs’ point of difference is in their knowledge, experience, and patience. It takes 36 hours and just four ingredients to make one of Crumbs’ sourdough loaves: flour, water, salt, and the baker’s hands! To achieve a loaf full of flavour, open crumb and chewy crust, with no additives or improvers, they must really have the expertise!

Sustainability is of utmost importance to the Crumbs team and compostable packaging and a renewable energy supply is used. Only natural ingredients are used and where possible, these are sourced from local suppliers.

Visit the Crumbs stall during your next visit and choose from the delicious treats on offer. How about something delicious to takeaway or order one of their amazing celebration cakes for a special occasion? Crumbs also offers a fantastic afternoon tea service which you can order and collect later at your convenience.
